Bernd-Georg Spies

Dr. Bernd-Georg Spies led the firm's Energy Practice in Europe. Based in Hamburg, he specializes in conducting assignments for energy and industrial clients, including executive assessments for firms ranging from medium-sized, family-run companies to multinational global corporations. Bernd has completed numerous high-profile searches for board members, presidents and CEOs of world-leading companies. Previously he lead the Global Industrial/Natural Resources sector for three years.

Recent Client Experience

Bernd's recent assignments within the sector include recruiting a CEO for one of Germany's largest utilities, working closely with a leading German and Italian Energy corporation, respectively, to find a MD Russia and recruitment of a CFO for a multinational energy services company. At board level, he is currently working with one of the world's largest industrial/energy solutions corporations on regional consultation boards in various geographies across the globe.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining Russell Reynolds Associates in 1997, Bernd was Assistant Secretary to the Minister of Trade and Commerce in the state of Mecklenburg-West Pommerania. Previously, he was Managing Director of Trägergesellschaft Schiffbau, overseeing economic revitalization of shipyard sites. Before that, Bernd spent five years in the state department of Labor, Health and Social Services in Hamburg. Earlier, he was a Research Fellow at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in London. Bernd began his career as an economist at the Institute for Social Research in Saarbrücken and later worked with the German Trade Union Federation in Düsseldorf.

Bernd is an alumnus of Atlantik Brücke's Young Leaders Program and a German Marshall Fund Fellow.

Education

Bernd received his M.Sc. in economics at the University of Wuppertal and his Ph.D. at the University of Bremen. He is fluent in German and English and has a working knowledge of French and Italian.
