Insurance Executive Moves | Q1 2023

EMEA

Aegon

  • Jan Weidema has announced his intention to step down from his role as Head of Investor Relations at Aegon in July 2023. His successor is yet to be announced.

Allianz

  • Aylin Somersan Coqui transitions from her role as Group CRO at Allianz to Group CEO at Allianz Trade.
  • Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) has announced the leadership across four of its largest P&C Commercial insurance markets. In Australia, Allianz Commercial will be led by Phuong Ly as Chief General Manager. In France, the division will be led by Patrick Thiels as Country Manager. In Germany, the group will be led by Hans-Joerg Mauthe, and the commercial business in the UK will be led by Nadia Côté.
  • AGCS further announced that Gordon Browne will assume the position of Global Head of Specialty, reporting into the CUO Shanil Williams.
  • Jon-Paul Jones will succeed Bettina Dietsche as COO for AGCS.
  • Dirk Vogler has been appointed Chief MidCorp Transformation Officer, a newly created role in the Board of Management of AGCS in response to the Integrated Commercial strategy.

AON

  • Sarah E. Smith, a former member of the Management Committee of Goldman Sachs, has been appointed to Aon’s Board of Directors.
  • Eduardo Davila is appointed to President of Aon Spain, while continuing his responsibilities as CEO of Aon EMEA, and also serving as a member of the Aon Executive Committee Global.
  • Simon Jeffreys is appointed as Chairman of Aon Risk Solutions, the global risk management business of Aon. He replaces Bruce Carnegie-Brown.

Aviva

  • Barry Cudmore is named as CEO for Aviva's Irish Life and Pensions arm. He takes over from interim CEO, Dave Swanton. Cudmore most recently worked for UK life insurance company LV as their CFO.
  • Caroline Eyre steps down from her role of Deputy CUO Specialty Lines to join BMS group, the specialist insurance and reinsurance broker, as Managing Director of Construction.

AXA  

  • Claudia Ingenhoven joins AXA as CFO of the firm's XL Reinsurance division, based in Zurich. She most recently served as CEO of Glacier Reinsurance, and oversaw the integration of Glacier Reinsurance into Swiss Re.
  • AXA XL announced that Stephanie Coxall has been promoted to Head of Underwriting Management, UK & Lloyd's.

Generali 

  • Monica Provini is appointed Head of Group Media Relations & Content Management. She is to take over from Roberto Alatri who is leaving the position.

Hannover Re 

  • Sharon Ooi joins Hannover Re’s Executive Board as Head of P&C, joining from Swiss Re where she last headed Australia and New Zealand.

Hiscox 

  • Robert Childs, Chairman of Hiscox board will retire in 2023. His successor is yet to be announced.

MS Amlin 

  • Benedikt Schmid is appointed Chief Information and Data Officer for MS Reinsurance. He joins from AXIS Capital, where he was most recently Chief Information Officer for Reinsurance.

Swiss Re  

  • Sergio Ermotti will step down as Swiss Re Chairman after the AGM to re-join UBS as CEO.
  • Thierry Léger has stepped down from his role as Group CUO to become CEO of SCOR with effect from May 1, 2023.
  • Velina Peneva has been appointed Group Chief Investment Officer, succeeding Guido Furer. She served as Co-Head Client Solutions and Analytics within Swiss Re's asset management division.
  • Nina Arquint has been promoted to CEO for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. She previously served as CRO for Corporate Solutions. She succeeds Fred Kleiterp, who will join Beazley as European General Manager.
  • Arquint’s prior responsibilities will be assumed by Annette Kurtzweil, currently CRO North America at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.
  • A number of executive moves within Swiss Re’s reinsurance arm have been announced as a consequence of Swiss Re’s plan to streamline its organisational structure. Swiss Re splits Reinsurance into P&C Re and L&H Re.
    • Urs Baertschi, currently CEO Reinsurance EMEA, will lead P&C Re, while Paul Murray, currently CEO Reinsurance Asia Pacific, will lead L&H Re.
    • Gianfranco Lot and Nicola Parton have been appointed CUO and COO of P&C Re respectively.
    • Julien Descombes and Grace Wong have been respectively appointed CUO and COO of L&H Re.

Willis Towers Watson 

  • Following the combination of the company’s regional outsourcing teams into one business globally, Jane Murray has been appointed Global Outsourcing business leader.
  • Clare Muhiudeen retired from her role as Head of Asia. She is succeeded by Simon Weaver, Head of Australasia, in the new combined role as Head of Asia Pacific. Simon will report into Pamela Thomson-Hall, Head of International.

 

Americas

Aspen

  • Aspen announced the appointment of David Altmaier to its Board as a Non-Executive Director, subject to receipt of any required regulatory approvals.
  • David Amaro is appointed Group General Counsel, a promotion from his prior role as Group Head of Legal.

AIG

  • Shane Fitzsimmons stepped down from his role as CFO to take a medical leave of absence.
  • Mark Lyons took the role as CFO ad interim, but was terminated from his position shortly after.
  • Sabra Purtil has been named CFO ad interim. She previously served as Chief Investment Officer for Life and Retirement. 

AXIS

  • Albert Benchimol is set to retire from his role as President of AXIS. Vincent Tizzio, currently CEO of Specialty Insurance and reinsurance will succeed him. 

Chubb

  • Frances O'Brien is appointed CRO and EVP of Chubb Group, succeeding Sean Ringsted. Ringsted is appointed Chief Digital Business Officer. 

Erie Insurance Group

  • Gregory Gutting is stepping down from his role as CFO to retire. He is succeed by Julie Pelkowski who currently leads Erie's enterprise office.
  • Sean Dugan has been promoted to EVP, Human Resources and Corporate Services from his previous role as SVP Human Resources. 

Everest Re

  • Srini Maddineni is promoted to Group Chief Information Officer, succeeding the incumbent Terry Walker who is set to retire.
  • Brent Hoffman is appointed to interim General Counsel upon the departure of Sanjoy Mukherjee. In addition to his role as Interim General Counsel of Everest, Mr. Hoffman will retain his position as Head of Claims and COO for the Company’s Reinsurance business. 

Great West Life Company

  • Graham Bird steps down from his role as CRO at Great West Life Company. He will continue working for the company in the capacity of Special Advisor. He is succeed by Dervla Tomlin, who previously served as Chief Actuary. 

The Hartford

  • Shekar Pannala joins Hartford in the newly created role of Chief Information Officer P&C. He most recently worked for Chubb as Global Chief Information Officer.

Liberty Mutual

  • Ann Stanberry is promoted to Chief Strategy Officer from her prior role as Strategy & Planning for Global Retail Markets.
  • Damon Hart is promoted to Chief Legal Officer, from his prior role of Deputy Chief Legal Officer.
  • Monica Caldas has been appointed Chief Information Officer, succeeding James McGlennon, who is retiring. Caldas most recently served as Global CRO for GRM before joining Liberty Mutual in 2018.

Lincoln Financial Group

  • Lincoln Financial Group names Sean N. Woodroffe Chief People, Culture and Communications Officer, joining the company May 1, 2023 from TIAA. Woodroffe replaces Chief People Officer Jen Warne, who is stepping down from her role effective April 14, 2023.
  • Randal Freitag will step down from his role as CFO. He is succeeded by Christopher Neczypor, who served as Chief Strategy Officer. Tom Faenza, currently SVP, Office of the CEO, will take on the responsibilities of Chief Strategy Officer. 

Manulife

  • John Cassaday retired in February 2023 from his role as Chair of the Board of Directors. He is succeeded by Don Lindsay.
  • Mariann Harrison, CEO of John Handcock, a unit of Manulife, is set to retire. Brooks Tingle, who currently runs the insurance business, is set to succeed her.

Markel Corp

  • Jeremy Noble has been promoted to President, Insurance, at Markle. He most recently served as CFO. He is succeeded by Teri Gendron, who joins from Jeffries where she was CFO.

Marsh & McLennan

  • Judith Hartmann and Ray G. Young have been appointed to the Board of Directors of Marsh & McLennan with immediate effect, enlarging the board to 15 directors.

MassMutual

  • John Rugel is appointed to Head of Operations. He most recently served as COO at Global Atlantic Financial Group. Rugel will report to MassMutual Chairman, President and CEO, Roger Crandall, and will join MassMutual’s Executive Leadership Team.
  • Tim Corbett, Chief Investment Officer, will retire. He will be succeeded by Eric Partlan, Head of Portfolio Management.

MetLife

  • Bryan Boudreau has been named EVP and Global Chief Actuary. He succeeds Andy Rallis, who is set to retire after a 39 year career at MetLife.

New York Life Insurance

  • Jomil Guerrero re-joins New York Life Insurance Company as Chief Diversity Officer. She reports to Kathleen Navarro, Senior Vice President, Head of Business Enablement, who will continue to oversee all DE&I efforts. Guerrero was most recently COO at IndexIQ.
  • Joanne Rodgers is promoted to SVP Head of Human Resources.

Northwestern Mutual Life

  • Michael Gerard Carter is announced Chief of Staff to CEO, from his prior role of CFO / CRO.
  • David Gordon is announced as Chief Technology Officer. Gordon most recently served as Chief Technology and Data Officer with USAA Federal Savings Bank.
  • John Grogan will step down from Chief Insurance Officer to retire. He will be succeeded by Kamilah Williams-Kemp, who currently serves as VP of Risk Products.  

Reinsurance Group of America

  • Anna Manning will step down as President, with the goal to retire at the end of 2023. She is succeeded by Tony Cheng who held the position of Head of EMEA, Asia and Australia. 

The Hanover

  • Hanover Insurance Group appoints David Lovely as Chief Claims Officer. He succeeds Mark Welzenbach, who will be retiring.  

Truist

  • Andy Hawking, Chief Marketing Officer retired in Q1 2023. Billy Santos is set to succeed him.

 

Asia Pacific

QBE

  • Julie Wood joins QBE as Global head of Distribution. She recently worked for Marsh, as Southeast Partnership Leader.
  • Michael Foley has been promoted to President, Commercial Insurance. He joined QBE in April 2022 as CUO for QBE's Commercial Casualty Business.

Sompo

  • Sompo International appoints Brad Leighton as President of AgriSompo North America and Marji Guyler-Alaniz COO of AgriSompo North America and President of AgriSompo International.
  • Nicolas Burnet joins Sompo International as CFO from Partner Re, taking over from Michael McGuire who retires after 20 years with the firm.
  • Paul O’Neill has been appointed President of Commercial Lines Asia Pacific. He joins from Howden Specialty, where he was CEO for APAC.
  • Yoshihiro Uotani, Group CRO, is appointed Group Chief Information Officer in conjunction with his current responsibilities. This comes at the announcement of the resignation of Taisei Kawazoe, Group Chief Information Officer.

Tokio Marine

  • Akira Harashima resigns from his role as VP, Director of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance.
  • John Glomb JR, CEO of Philadelphia Insurance Company, has assumed the role of Executive Officer at Tokio Marine Holdings in conjunction with his current responsibilities.
  • Kichiichiro Yamamoto assumes the role of Co-Head of International Business.
  • Kiyoshi Wada assumed the role of Group COO and Group Chief Sustainability Officer.  

Ping An

  • Zhang Zhichun is appointed as CFO.
